Betty Kamya to hold demo over school fires

Rubaga North Mp, Betty Olive Kamya, has vowed to lead aggrieved parents in a demonstration on the 24th of July, to express anger over investigations into school fires. This comes after police released a report last week, blaming the fires on aggrieved students, negligence of school authorities, drugs and criminals.

The planned demonstration follows a controversial decision by Parliament last week in which Mps voted to dismiss a motion by Wakiso Woman MP Rose Senninde to institute private investigations into the rampant fires in schools.

A few days later, police released a report blaming the fires on aggrieved students, drugs and negligence of school authorities. This however, didn't go well with parents some of whom lost children in the April 14 th inferno at Buddo, who see the report as shallow.

They have now turned to the Rubaga North Mp, Betty Olive Kamya for action. During a press conference at parliament, the mp revealed a planned demonstration against the police and later a petition to the speaker over the way the MPs handled the matter.

She also confirmed her intention to hold the demonstration with or without police permission. The call for the private investigations into the fires is also against a backdrop of earlier failure of police to present conclusive reports on the Kichwamba massacre and the mengo murders in 2006.

Kamya is demanding f a private investigation into the fires ruling out the involvement of the Rapid Response unit, JAT and any government affiliated institution but rather a commission of inquiry by an independent lawyer, Scotland Yard or an international firm.

In the last two months, the country has witnessed over 30 fires in schools. In Buddo junior school where 20 children died in a fire, the arsonists are yet to be apprehended.
