13 year old arrested over school Fires

A thirteen year old girl of St. Henry's primary school in Masajja a long Busabala road has been arrested for allegedly habouring an intention to burn the school.

It is alleged that the girl, who can neither be named nor recorded on camera because she is a minor, wanted to be a hero like the late Yvonne Namaganda of Buddo primary school.

Namaganda perished in the tragic incident at Buddo Junior School in April 2008 while trying to rescue her dorm mates, duringh a mysterious inferno in which 20 girl pupils lost their lives.

Police Public Relations officer Judith Nabakoba indicates that the Primary Seven level suspect is being held at Katwe Police Station for further interrogation.

So far 38 schools have been burnt in the recent past in various parts of the country.An unspecified number of students have been arrested in connection with the arson or attempted arson.

Among those arrested is an 11 year old boy of Kibibi demonstration school who has since been released on police bond.

It is alleged that the boy wanted to burn the school simply because he was forced to study in a school which was not of his choice.

When approached, the headmaster of St. Henry primary school who was uncooperative and declined to give his name, denied that any arrests had been made at the school and that he was unaware of any girl who had intentions of burning the school.

Investigations into the causes of the fires in schools continue and police vows to arrest all those involved in such barbaric acts.
