Micro Finance Institutions want a law to regulate them

Micro Finance institutions are pressing government to enact a comprehensive law to fully regulate their operations, instead of placing them under the supremacy of Bank of Uganda. This was at a three day international micro finance conference that attracted about 100 delegates from over twenty.

The call for a comprehensive law follows instances under which a number of unscrupulous micro finance institutions have robbed customers of their money. Among them was Front Page micro finance, which dragged customers into a strike, for allegedly cheating customers of millions of shillings.

Among other recommendations was an appeal for a fully liberalized micro finance sector, with no interference from Bank of Uganda. State Minister for Micro Finance, General Salim Saleh, cautioned micro finance institutions on their policy of money lending.

The 3 day international micro finance conference aims at examining factors affecting microfinance institutions in Africa , and drafting policy recommendations to govern their operations.
