FIDA to investigate police over Nabila

The Federation of Uganda Women Lawyers has started investigations into the man handling of Kampala District Woman Member of Parliament, Nabira Sempala, by police on the 15 th June, 2008. Woman lawyer and chairperson of Action Aid Uganda , Irene Ovonji Odida, says use of excessive power by police on that fateful day was a total humiliation of the women movement in Uganda .

Women lawyers and other civil society organizations have teamed up to seek legal redress over the humiliation of female MP for Kampala district, Nabira Nagayi Sempala, by Police. The MP was nearly undressed by some police constables at Balikudembe market on the 15 th June 2008 as she launched public suggestion boxes.

The chairperson of Action Aid Uganda , Irene Ovunji Odida says video clips showing police action against the MP have been secured and more information from eye witnesses is being documented. Other issues that came up at the meeting was the bailing out of perpetuators of rape and defilement by the court.

Odida claims that most perpetuators have ended committing more rape and defilement cases because there's no serious disciplinary action passed by the courts law. She accuses police of sabotaging some reported defilement and rape cases.
