KCC to demolish Robert Sebunnya's building

Kampala City Council threatens legal action against presidential advisor on Buganda affairs Robert Sebunnya for failing to demolish his poorly-constructed structure found in Kabuusu Lubaga division. This follows Sebunnya's failure to adhere to the KCC contravention notice requiring him to demolish the building said to fall below the minimum standards.

The building in question is found between Sydney hotel and UMEME offices on a down ward stretch from Lubaga Cathedral towards Nateete in Lubaga division. KCC says the state of the building has put the owner, builders and neighbor's lives at risk.

Although KCC served Sebunnya with a contravention notice as at February, 06, 2008 requiring him to halt construction and demolish the shoddy structure, he has since then turned a deaf ear.

Sebunnya who is carrying out humanitarian work in Tororo told WBS on phone that he contacted KCC upon receiving the notice but Chief Town Planner, Peter Katebalirwe advised him to get a structural engineer to make some modifications to the building instead of demolishing it.

Sebunnya then contacted Eng. Turinaye of Egma Contractors who has already carried out a feasibility study and work is expected to commence next week.

KCC threatens to drag owners of buildings found along Nakivubo channel to court for disposing sewage in the channel. Among those sighted is Sebco plaza annex to St. Balikuddembe market in the lower part of Kampala .

Proprietor of the plaza, Sebalamu who is on a business trip in Dubhai denies the KCC allegations. He instead promised tough action against KCC for blocking him from constructing a waterway in front of this building resulting into water logging at its front.

To KCC, operations to penalize those deviating from regulations would be carried out smoothly if it was not for inadequate resources and interference from big shots in government. Deputy town clerk of Kampala Muwonge Kewaza reveals that at least 75 % buildings in Kampala do not conform to the required standards.

Some of the buildings were constructed hurriedly during thhe Commonwealth Meeting with inferior materials. Others were built in road reserves while the majority lack parking space.
