Buganda cabinet to hold an emergency meeting

The Buganda Cabinet is to have an emergency meeting tomorrow to discuss its response to the arrest of its Ministers, Charles Peter Mayiga and his deputy as well as the chairperson of Buganda's central civic Education committee, Betty Nambooze.

A statement signed by Buganda's Attorney General,Apollo Makubuya says the Buganda government has not been officially informed of the charges being preferred against the detainees . A statement attributed to the Inspector General of Police, Maj.Gen Kale Kaihura says the three are being charged with promoting sectarianism, inciting violence, sedition and terrorism.

However the kingdom says the charges are a fabrication and that they point directly at a hidden agenda of intimidation and humiliation of the people of Buganda. The kingdom instead calls those arrested prisoners of conscience.

Buganda's Prime Minister, John Baptist Walusimbi is currently engaged in negotiations with senior government officials and security agencies on the detainees.

Meanwhile the kingdom is calling on all Ugandans, religious bodies as well Human rights organizations to rally behind the establishment in denouncing what the Kingdom describes as the heavy handed and illegal action by government.
