Buganda arrested ministers transferred to western Uganda

Buganda Information Minister, Charles Peter Mayiga , his deputy, Medard Lubega Seggona and the Chairperson of Buganda Civic Committee Betty Nambooze Bakireke have been transferred to Bundibugyo, Ibanda and Kyenjojo prisons respectively.

With charges of treason, illegal purchase of guns, insinuating tribalism among others expected to be preferred against them, the trio will be arraigned in court tomorrow.

According to their lawyer, Erias Lukwago, the three suspects including Buganda Spokesperson Charles Peter Mayiga, his deputy Medard Lubega Seggona and Chairperson of Buganda Civic Committee, Betty Nambooze Bakireke were transferred to the different areas at around 7 pm on Saturday.

Lukwago says that he received a call requiring him to go to the CID headquarters where the trio had been transferred. However due to fear, he sent some envoys there. He says the envoys waited for the suspects more than six hours in vain.

He was later told by some insiders within the police force that Mayiga, Medard and Nambooze had been transferred to Bundibugyo, Ibanda and Kyenjojo respectively. It is in those different areas that they will be charged in court of law.

Lukwago unveiled a plan of dispatching a contingent of more than 30 lawyers to handle the case starting Monday. Meanwhile some Members of the Buganda Parliamentary caucus say the charges are concocted by government to instill fear amongst Ugandans who are fighting against the land amendment bill.

The Inspector General of Police, Maj.Gen Kale Kaihura on Saturday released a statement indicating charges of treason, instigating sectarian and tribal violence and buying guns among others.

Those arrested are part of the many alleged to be on the wanted list for charges related to instigating tribalism. Most of these are on the run while others are taking refuge in their homes with friends and relatives maintaining strict surveillance.
