Parliament wants Yvonne Namaganda declared Hero

Parliament has unanimously passed a motion to declare Yvonne Namganda, the 10 year pupil who died trying to rescue her fellow pupils from the Buddo Inferno, a national hero. Members of Parliament argue that Yvonne Namaganda died because she selflessly tried to save other housemates in the blaze that claimed the lives of 20 girls.

The Buddo fire which broke out on the 14 th day of April 2008 and claimed the lives of 20 innocent young girls brings fresh memories to Ugandans just by mere mention.

Wakiso District Member of Parliament Rosemary Sseninde seconded by the National member of parliament for the Youth Mariam Nalubega moved a motion calling upon Government to declare the late 10 year-old Namaganda, a national hero.

Sseninde told the house that most of the fire survivors revealed that it was Namaganda who helped open the door but perished before she could save herself. The MPs say that a living memorial like a building should be put up in remembrance of the little girl.

Soroti Woman MP Alice Alaso however tasked the ministry of education and Government to try and inform the public about the progress of their investigations, citing the Police spokesperson Judith Nabakoba's comments in which she warned the public against statements related to the Buddo tragedy if justice is to be brought forth.

The MP's tasked Government to formulate a comprehensive firefighting policy in all sectors, planning of the buildings in general, regular school inspections, design a clear insurance policy and seriously address fire fighting issues.

The Prime Minister Apollo Nsibambi said that the proposal on the late Yvonne Namaganda will be taken to cabinet for scrutiny. If she is declared a national hero, he will be the youngest hero in Uganda .
