Uganda to host 2010 AU Summit

Uganda has won a bid to host the African Union Summit in 2010. The bid was won during the just concluded African union Summit in Egypt . The announcement was made by the Foreign affairs Minister Sam Kuteesa during a press briefing at the Ministry in Kampala.

During a media briefing on the outcomes of the summit, Minister Kuteesa said Uganda will once again be blessed to host such a big conference which is expected to market Uganda more on the international scene.

On the situation in Zimbabwe , the minister strongly concurs with a decision to have strong sanctions placed on the country.

He also hinted at one of the prominent issues of the African Peer review mechanism for Uganda which was unbalanced development.

It was realized during the summit that the Northern part of Uganda has lagged behind in terms of development due to the war in the area.

The issue of skyrocketing world food prices was also debated and the international community was asked to fulfill its commitment to provide the much needed additional resources.

The African Union started in 2002 with the aim of strengthening unity among African nations and to strengthen democracy. It has 53 member states.
